Derek Tan and Linda Foo

November 19, 2010

…most of our intimate parts (of the wedding) are in the (onsite) video which we have no idea how Bob chose the exact moments.”

These words were from Derek, the groom of our Malaysia wedding couple. Honestly, we don’t know either how we chose those exact moments but we’re just glad that we did… and that you guys enjoyed it. :-)

Derek and Linda, thank you for “pampering” us all throughout our stay in Malaysia… and making our first out-of-country wedding a memorable one.

The twin ceremonies was full of sentiments– digging deep from their experiences in their relationship. To give more meaning to the video, here’s their story from the words of the groom himself:

Linda and I met in Air Asia. We were in the same department for about 2 months without us realising the existence of each other. On the 3rd month, she was moving her computer’s monitor and I asked her if she needed help. That was our first conversation and the first time she smiled at me.

Somehow we became closer day by day… God knows when did I start chatting with her more often, exchanging secret glances and smiles right across our desks. Suddenly she went to Cambodia and we texted each other furiously. When she came back, I gave her a call and she asked me, “What are we?”

She made me wait for our first date — she went off to Beijing and left me waiting and when she got back (I folded her 11 flowers and said she was number 12 and the prettiest of all), I had to make a trip to Perth.

When she fell in love with me, she told me that I broke all her rules:
1. That she would not love someone younger than her (I’m younger by a year)
2. That she would not love someone at her workplace
3. That she would not love someone who does not know Mandarin (which I don’t)

One day while walking her back to her car at work, she turned to me, and for the first time said, “I love you.” I heard this song, “Lathika’s theme” from Slumdog Millionaire, as she was turning to me (that’s why when she walked into the church on our wedding day with this song, I nearly cried) and that moment, it sealed my heart completely. I told her on the spot, that one day, I will introduce her as the most beautiful woman in the world and the love of my life, Mrs Tan.

Everyday after, I would write her a blogpost and write her a hand note that I would hide under her keyboard. She in turn would buy or make me breakfast. We kept this secret for a while until we were exposed. My blog became my secret letters to her everyday and everytime she went on a trip, I would write her stories, recipes of our love, songs, poems and even drama scripts!

I proposed after coming back from her birthday trip in Bali (she was upset as she thought I would propose there!!!) and I got down on my knees on the eve of her drama practice when she was this carnivorous plant (in green paint with blood) and I used the same proposal words as my wedding vow, “On the day that you are most grotesque and ugly, marry me”. So most of our intimate parts are in the video which we have no idea how Bob chose the exact moments.

And she also decided to propose to me on my birthday trip to Hong Kong and Macau. She collaborated with the boatman at the Venetian and as the boatman sang of love, she got down on her knees and proposed to me. It was one of the most touching moments for me in my life.

And we began plans for our wedding in November 2009.

Warm regards,
Derek & Linda
